Weekly Market Report

Happy Cinco De Mayo and welcome to the Weekly Market Report, your go-to rundown for all the highs and lows of the week.

It’s almost time for the wildest brunch service of the year. Mother’s Day hits this Sunday, and you already know what that means...you're gonna be slammmmmed. While we can’t control the endless stream of walk-ins and orders of mimosas and eggs benny, we’ll do everything we can to make sure you’ve got what you need for a smooth service.

Here’s what’s worth knowing this week!

THE TL;DR VERSION

Market At A Glance:

  • 🔺Tight & elevated: Tomatoes remain extremely tight with heavy prorates and quality issues (some relief late next week). Lettuce, celery, broccoli, and cauliflower are all very limited. Hot peppers, carrots, napa, and artichokes remain constrained. Raspberries are tight, and grapes are tightening.
  • 🔻Easing: Cucumbers, green beans, tomatillos, and jicama are improving. Blueberries are building quickly. Honeydew has stabilized, and corn should continue to improve.
  • ➡️ Transitioning: Ongoing spring transitions are driving volatility, especially in lettuce and tomatoes. Onions are shifting to new crop. Berries are mixed, and melons are transitioning from offshore to domestic supply.

🚨 Upcoming Holiday Closure: We will be closed Monday, May 18th for Victoria Day. There will be no deliveries on the 18th. Regular service will resume Tuesday, May 19th. Adjust your orders accordingly.

🚚 New Route Alert!: Bondi is now delivering to Stratford on Tuesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays!

📈 What’s Up?: Price increases this week on red and green leaf lettuce, iceberg, Bartlett pears, zucchini, taro root, green beans, baby bok choy, and white onions as crop transitions, regional quality challenges in Mexico, and weather impacts continue to tighten supply and push markets higher.

📉 What's Down?: Price decreases this week on hothouse, cluster, and grape tomatoes, guajillo dried peppers, blueberries, corn, select hot peppers, asparagus, and limes as greenhouse and domestic production ramps up, additional supply comes online, and improving availability across multiple regions continues to ease markets.

🍅 Tomato Market Update: The tomato market remains extremely elevated this week but conditions are expected to improve next week.

🌟 New Arrivals: Welsh Bros asparagus is restocked after our first harvest sold out QUICK last week. Red and French breakfast radishes from Clearwater, Black River pear juice, and heavy duty aluminum foil and parchment sheets are all new this week.

💐 Mother's Day Picks: Mother’s Day is this weekend and we've got everything you need to make every plate feel a little more special!

Market Recap

What's Up, What's Down

📈Price Increases📈

These items have surged in price this week:

  • RED + GREEN LEAF & ICEBERG (2683, 2661 & 3244) - Transition to California continues to present quality challenges, with stronger product commanding premium pricing and driving markets higher.
  • BARTLETT PEARS (3139) - Supply is shifting from South African to Argentinian origin as the season turns.
  • FANCY ZUCCHINI (3551) - Mexican growing regions have been impacted by recent rainfall, temporarily tightening supply and putting pressure on yields.
  • TARO ROOT (3376) - Low production out of Mexico is keeping supply tight, with elevated pricing expected to continue over the next couple of months.
  • GREEN BEANS (2153) - Mexico is winding down, and Florida quality issues are pushing prices higher for better veg.
  • BABY BOK CHOY (2206) -Tight market driven by quality issues in Mexico; expect a shift toward local product over the next couple of weeks.
  • WHITE ONION (2878) - Transition to California/New Mexico crops pushing pricing up due to lower yields vs. Northwest onions.

📉Price Drops📉

These items have dropped in price this week:

  • HOT HOUSE, CLUSTER & GRAPE TOMATOES (7381, 7382 & 4643) - Ontario greenhouse supply continues to build with improving weather, with further price relief expected in the coming weeks.
  • GUAJILLO PEPPERS  DRIED (4119) - Availability is improving slightly, allowing for some modest price relief.
  • BLUEBERRIES (2193) - Price decrease due to supply transitions to U.S. origin.
  • CORN (2374) - Market continues to open up with Florida nearly fully online. Stronger supply is driving further cost relief.
  • JALAPENOS & HOT BANANA PEPPERS (2994, & 2976) - Florida is yielding more, putting pressure on Mexico pricing. With strong supply from both regions, further price decreases are expected.
  • RED LONG CHILIS (4008) - Now sourcing from the Netherlands as supply shifts regions, bringing prices down.
  • THAI GREEN CHILIS (3024) - Improved availability on Thai peppers out of the Dominican Republic is helping ease pricing.
  • ASPARAGUS (2093) - Ontario supply is coming online, building inventories and driving continued downward pricing.
  • LIMES (2720) - Sharp price drop as production ramps up, especially on 230s and 250s.
