Welcome to the Weekly Market Report, your go-to rundown for all the highs and lows of the week.
We have gooood news! Christmas came early, and by Christmas I mean the arrival of Tigchelaar Ontario strawberries! We've got limited availability for our first shipment with more arriving Thursday this week. We've also got a limited supply of some beautiful fresh porcini mushrooms, an important update on the avocado market, a few notable price shifts, and some exciting local arrivals on the horizon.
Let's get into it...
THE TL;DR VERSION
Market At A Glance:
🔺Tight & elevated: Romaine, romaine hearts, leaf lettuces, iceberg, celery, avocados, grapes, artichokes, and pineapple remain under pressure with limited supply, prorates, quality concerns, and elevated markets persisting. Avocados continue to tighten rapidly (details below).
🔻Easing: Tomato supply and quality continue improving out of Mexico, with Florida and East Coast production ramping up. Broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and watermelon are all seeing improved supply and more stable availability.
➡️ Transitioning: Tomato production continues shifting north into Georgia, South Carolina, and California. Citrus remains heavily skewed toward larger fruit, leaving smaller lemons, navels, and specialty citrus sizes tight. Offshore grape season is winding down as Mexico ramps up, while avocado markets await increased Colombian and Peruvian volume to help bridge the gap until Mexico's next crop begins.
📈 What’s Up?: Price increases this week on Thai chilis, parsley, romaine, and butternut squash as supply tightens due to crop transitions, elevated lettuce markets, seasonal citrus pressure, and limited Thai chili availability.
📉 What's Down?: Price decreases this week on cauliflower, poblano peppers, bell peppers, mini sweets, celery, limes, Roma tomatoes, and zucchini as new U.S. crops ramp up, greenhouse and East Coast production expands, and strong supply from Mexico, Florida, Georgia, and local growers continues to pressure markets lower.
🚨 Escalated Avocado Market: Avocado supplies are tightening rapidly as Mexico nears the end of its season, driving higher prices and increased market volatility. Conditions expected throughout June.
🍓 New Arrivals: Our first harvest of Tigchelaar Ontario strawberries are here earlier than expected (code 3339) and a limited supply of fresh porcini mushrooms (code 8328)!
🔜 Coming Soon: Ontario English peas should be arriving in the next few weeks!
🟥 Red Flags: Supply updates plus full details and a few shorts from last week of note below.
⚽ Pantry Pick of the Week: FIFA is almost here which means it's time to stock up on canola oil and make sure your fryer is ready to put in some overtime!

🌟New Arrivals🌟
Ontario Strawberries | 3339 — The wait is over. Ontario strawberries from Tigchelaar Berry Farms have officially landed, arriving a little earlier than expected and tasting every bit like summer! Deep red colour, balanced sweetness, and soft, juicy texture that only really comes from properly field-ripened local berries.
Limited availability on this first shipment as the season kicks off with more arriving Thursday this week!
Fresh Porcini Mushrooms | 8328 — We've got a limited supply of some gorgeous fresh porcini mushrooms this week! With a deep, woodsy flavour and rich texture, they bring serious depth to everything from pasta and risotto to roasted meats and simple vegetable dishes.
We are entering into a highly elevated avocado market as Mexico moves toward the end of its season. Supply has tightened significantly over the past two weeks, with growers slowing harvests and limiting available volume.
As a result, markets continue to climb aggressively and sourcing remains challenging across all sizes. Expect elevated pricing, limited availability, and ongoing market volatility throughout June as the industry works through the seasonal transition.
