Weekly Market Report

Welcome to the Weekly Market Report, your go-to rundown for all the highs and lows of the week.

How is it already the last day of March?! The year is flying by and we're already heading into the Easter long weekend. Speaking of the long weekend, just a friendly reminder that we are closed Friday, April 3rd for Good Friday, so be sure to stock up to carry you through to Saturday.

All routes are running on Thursday, April 2nd, and we’re back to business as usual Saturday, April 4th. We are also open Easter Monday (April 6th).

Now that the housekeeping's out of the way, there's lottttttts happening in the markets this week, so let’s just dive right into it!

 THE TL;DR VERSION

Market At A Glance:

  • 🔺Tight & elevated: Tomatoes (Romas, rounds & grape), limes, asparagus, green & French beans, sweet corn, peppers, berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries), romaine hearts, spinach, fennel.

→ freeze impacts, heat pressure, transit delays, and disease issues continuing to limit yields and create prorates across key categories.

  • 🔻Easing: Pineapple, mushrooms, onions, potatoes, mango, stone fruit.

→ stable supply and improving production helping support consistent availability.

  • ➡️ Transitioning:  Lettuce & brassicas (Yuma → Salinas), watermelon between seasons.

→ seasonal shifts causing intermittent gaps.

  • 🚨Supply Watch:
    • Tomatoes: Tomatoes will be extremely short for next 3–5 weeks.
    • Green & French Beans: Green beans extremely short due to Guatemala roadblocks and transit delays through Central America, with prorates and limited availability expected.

📈 What’s Up?: Price increases this week on peppers, asparagus, tomatoes, striped beets, red grapes, baby bok choy, and honeydew driven by Mexico/Central America transitions, competing import demand, and quality limitations tightening supply.

📉 What's Down?: Price decreases this week on AAA white asparagus, Thai chili peppers, broccolini, ginger, grapefruit, Royal Gala apples, and Bartlett pears as improved supply supports market relief.

🍅 Tomato Market Update: Highly volatile period ahead. Scroll for everything you need to know.

🌟New Arrivals: Baby artichokes are arriving tomorrow, new frozen zests from Ponthier, and Scrigni with Puglian burrata, a gorgeous stuffed pasta from Italy's Divine Creazioni!

🚫 Leaving Soon!: Mexican delicata squash season is ending, as is Radicchio Rosa and Radicchio Tardivo. What we have in stock is all we'll be getting so make sure to grab some while you can.

Market Recap

What's Up, What's Down

📈Price Increases📈

These items have surged in price this week:

  • PEPPERS (JALAPENO, YELLOW & RED BELL, RED LONG CHILI, POBLANOS) (2994, 3029, 3010, 4008, 3699) - Mexican crops have tightened quickly as production shifts to new growing regions. Supply is limited in the short term, keeping prices elevated.
  • ASPARAGUS (2093) - Market adjusting as Mexico winds down its season and transitions to new growing regions. Holiday demand is driving additional pressure, keeping pricing elevated as supply shifts to alternative origins.
  • TOMATOES (ROMA, ROUNDS, GRAPE) (3431, 4674, 4675, 4676) - Mexico supply has reached its seasonal low, driving elevated pricing and limited availability. Markets expected to remain escalated for the next few weeks until new Florida crop begins.
  • STRIPED BEETS (2180) - We have transitioned to Mexican beets as sizing, quality, and supply from Quebec were not meeting specs.
  • RED SEEDLESS GRAPES (2553) - Availability tightened this week, with competing supply from Chile and Peru driving markets higher.
  • BABY BOK CHOY (2206) - Quality rejections are limiting available supply, with good product becoming harder to secure.
  • HONEYDEW JUMBO (2570) - Honduras crop is finishing as we transition to new Guatemala supply. Early harvests are light with smaller-than-normal sizing.

📉Price Drops📉

These items have dropped in price this week:

  • AAA WHITE ASPARAGUS (4699) - Supply from the Netherlands is improving, with markets expected to ease in the coming weeks.
  • GREEN THAI CHILI PEPPERS, BROCCOLINI, GINGER ROOT (3024, 2216, 2538) - Supply has increased to meet current demand, bringing prices down.

  • GRAPEFRUIT (4448) - Market adjusting as supply shifts to Moroccan origin, supplementing Israel, Turkey, and USA programs.
  • ROYAL GALA APPLES (1888) - Market adjusting as Canadian product becomes available.
  • BARTLETT PEARS (3140) - Cost adjusting on South African imports, with good availability expected over the next 2–3 weeks supporting market relief.

Highly Volatile Period Ahead

🍅Tomato Market Update🍅

We are now seeing the full impact of the February freeze in Florida combined with blight and weather pressure in Sinaloa, significantly tightening supply across all tomato categories. Expect continued volatility and reduced availability over the next 3–5 weeks.

What this means

  • Overall tomato supply remains tight with elevated pricing
  • Romas are most heavily impacted
  • Rounds and grape tomatoes currently more available than Romas but declining rapidly, with possible gaps until late April/May
  • Lighter-coloured fruit is shipping due to limited inventory

What chefs can do

  • Limit tomatoes on menus where feasible
  • Substitute with greenhouse varieties, like our hothouse tomatoes (7381) or heirlooms (3423)
  • Store lighter-coloured fruit at warmer temps to support ripening
  • Avoid placing under-coloured fruit directly into cold storage

Our team is actively working to maintain as much consistency as possible as the market evolves.

Just In!
