Welcome to the Bondi Weekly Market Report — your go-to for all the highs, lows, and “why didn't I get my little gem?” moments of the week.

It’s officially December, which means holiday demand is ramping up, growers are battling weather challenges, and every chef in the city is gearing up for their busiest stretch of the year. We’ve got some price moves (up and down), a few fun new arrivals, and a couple of early warnings you’ll want on your radar.

Here’s what’s worth keeping an eye on this week...

THE TL;DR VERSION

Market At A Glance: 

• 🔺Tight & elevated: Most leafy greens (green/red leaf, romaine & hearts, iceberg, spring mix), Brussels sprouts, celery, broccolini, cauliflower, snow/snap peas, green beans, bok choy, fennel, green onions, strawberries, and blackberries remain elevated in the market due to heavy rain, low yields, and holiday demand.
• 🔻Easing: Tomato markets should improve as Florida volume increases, and honeydew supply is strengthening with more Mexican fruit crossing.
• ➡️ Transitioning: Mexico and Florida crops continue to ramp up; Yuma remains delayed from recent rains, affecting lettuces and baby leaf items. Melons, tomatoes, and eggplant are all in active transition.
• ✅ Peaking: Navels, lemons, mandarins, grapefruit, and Cara Caras/blood oranges are showing excellent quality and strong flavour this week.

📈 What’s Up?: Prices are up on celery, baby bok choy tips, Brussels sprouts, Kumato tomatoes, strawberries, and Marcona almonds due to seasonal demand, supply constraints, and freight increases.

📉 What's Down?: Prices are easing on raspberries, eggplant (Chinese + conventional), baby fennel, and leaf/romaine lettuces (although still elevated) as new regions come online and overall supply shows improvement. Details below.

🍈 New Arrivals: Santa Claus melons, pineberries, and Black River cranberry juice are new this week — fresh, seasonal, and ready for holiday menus!

☀️ On The Horizon: Working on sourcing pomelos, a few fun grape varieties, and Asian pears for next week — consider this your early heads-up. 

🟥 Red Flags: Haven Greens is expecting reduced availability for their foodservice spring mix throughout December. Full details and a few shorts from last week of note below.

• CELERY STALKS (2317) - Increase driven by stronger market demand and lower field yields as the Yuma season begins.
• BOK CHOY BABY TIPS (6628) - Transitioning to Mexico-grown product resulting in a price increase.
• GREEN ONIONS MEDIUM (2860) - Price increase driven by higher demand in the market.
  
• BRUSSELS SPROUTS (2225) - Increased seasonal demand heading into the holidays is driving up market prices.
  
• KUMATO TOMATOES (2477) - Premium, top-grade product is in short supply, with limited yields available.
  
• STRAWBERRIES (3346) - Price increase driven by strong market demand and the seasonal transition between import regions.
• MARCONA ALMONDS (7250) - Higher freight costs and increased raw product pricing.

These items have dropped in price this week:

• RASPBERRIES (3227) - Improved supply in the market is driving down raspberry prices.
• CHINESE EGGPLANT (6835) - Improved supply out of Mexico and the Dominican Republic.
  
• EGGPLANT (2478) - Mexico’s crop is starting to yield more product, helping meet demand and bring prices down.
• BABY FENNEL (10619)- Improved supply from the grower is driving prices down.
• GREEN LEAF & RED LEAF LETTUCE (2261 & 2683) - Pricing has eased a bit with the Yuma growing region now coming online.
• ROMAINE LETTUCE & ROMAINE HEARTS (9072, 2687, 2689 & 2696) - Pricing has eased a bit with the Yuma growing region now coming online.

Santa came early! Mild, sweet winter melon with pale flesh and a flavour between honeydew and cantaloupe. Holds up beautifully on fruit boards and in desserts.

• Haven Greens Spring Mix will see reduced availability through December due to tighter-than-usual supply from the greenhouse and some variability in growth cycles. Our team can help with subs.

Last Week's Shorts:

• Red Belgian Endive & Castelfranco Radicchio | 4566 & 4880 — Demand has picked up, but adjustments have been made. We’re in good shape with this week’s arrivals.
  
• Baby Spinach | 3255 — Increased demand last week resulted in some shorts. Should be good moving forward.
• Little Gem Lettuces | 2658 & 6247 — Weather challenges on the grower side have reduced available volume, leading the supplier to cut our order.
• Watercress Red & Cello | 4479 & 4038 — Increased demand last week resulted in some shorts. Should be good moving forward.
  
• Roots Revival Mizuna | 5173 — Limited availability from the grower.
  
• 35% Whip Cream | 6073 & 6830— High demand and a delivery delay caused a one-day shortage. Product is now back in stock.
• Caulilini | 7341 —  Increased demand last week resulted in some shorts. We've adjusted our orders. 
• Ontario Black Garlic | 7536 — Increasing demand. Adjustments have been made and we should be good as of this week's arrival. Back in stock now.
• Sprout Chervil (Living Clamshell) | 10475 — High demand combined with a delivery delay caused a one-day gap, but product is now back in stock.
