Welcome to the Weekly Market Report, your go-to rundown for all the highs and lows of the week.
Well, we've got some exciting new additions dropping this week! On the produce side, say hello to Brazilian Palmer mangos, mandarinquats, red plums, and Tuscan melons. And outside of produce, we’re launching a lineup of premium Italian imports from MENU tomorrow, and trust us, they’re worth the hype.
Plus, we're gearing up for the RC Show this Sunday to Tuesday (March 8th-10th) at the International Centre in Mississauga. If you're going to be there, make sure to pop by Booth 1406 and say hi to the Bondi team!
Now, let’s jump into this week’s updates and everything you need on your radar…
THE TL;DR VERSION
Market At A Glance :
🔺Tight & elevated: Weather pressure, cold snaps, and lighter yields are keeping markets tight on lettuce, tender leaf, celery, carrots, green onions, broccoli, cauliflower, broccolini, fennel, leeks, Napa, herbs, green beans, and warm veg (corn, squash, cucumbers, peppers). Expect light cases, smaller product, prorates, and shorter shelf life across Yuma, Mexico, and Florida.
🔻Easing: Red grapes continue to show strong supply and quality with some relief week over week. Pineapple is slightly better with improved sizing. Brussels sprouts continue to improve week over week.
➡️ Transitioning: Strawberries remain tight from recent rain/freeze but are easing slightly. Bananas and small citrus are tightening as demand stays high and crops peak larger.
🚨Supply Gap — Yuma Transition & Florida Corn Freeze Impact: Yuma’s early wrap and the shift to Salinas are expected to bring 6-8 weeks of volatility on lettuce and brassicas, with tight supply and elevated pricing. We are also currently experiencing limited corn availability due to tight supply in the U.S. and Mexico, with few FOB options meeting our quality standards. We are actively reviewing suitable alternatives to see if we can cover the market.
📈 What’s Up?: Freeze impacts, low yields, and tight imports are pushing prices higher on select peppers, Roma tomatoes, tomatoes, strawberries, blueberries, hot house tomatoes, and Red Delicious apples.
📉 What's Down?: Improving supply and better yields are easing markets on Vidalia onions, iceberg lettuce, and seedless red grapes.
🌟New Arrivals: Brazilian Palmer mangos, Mandarinquats, red plums, and Tuscan melons are new in produce this week! We’ve also added new premium Italian imports from Modena — MENU's Saporosa Pizza Sauce and Cipolline Onions in Balsamic of Modena.
☀️On the Horizon: Forced rhubarb, white and purple asparagus should be arriving in the next few weeks.
🚫Leaving Soon: Radicchio Rosa & Tardivo will be winding down at the end of March.
📆 RC Show: Come visit us Sunday through Tuesday next week (March 8th-10th) at Booth 1406!
🟥 Red Flags: Full details and a few shorts from last week of note below.
💦Pantry Pick of the Week: Introducing Jug canned water, ideal for sports centres and golf courses!
Market Recap
What's Up, What's Down
📈Price Increases📈
These items have surged in price this week:
GREEN PEPPERS, ROMA TOMATOES & TOMATOES (2988, 3431, 4674 & 4676) -The recent freeze in Florida has severely impacted these crops, driving steep price increases across both United States and Mexico production. Peak pricing is expected to hold for the next 4–6 weeks.
THAI GREEN PEPPERS & HOT FINGER PEPPERS (3024 & 3712) - Availability from the Dominican Republic is currently limited, pushing market prices higher.
POBALNO PEPPERS & SHISHITO PEPPERS (3699 & 3019) -We have switched to Mexican product which has resulted in a price increase.
STRAWBERRIES (3346) - Adjustment back to normal market levels after the temporary Florida flush caused by Valentine’s demand and the recent freeze over the last two weeks.
BLUEBERRIES (2193) - Demand for product of Mexico has increased, and ongoing harvest delays are pushing up costs on available supply.
HOT HOUSE TOMATOES (7381) - Greenhouses still aren’t hitting normal yields for this time of year, keeping prices higher than usual due to persistent cold weather.
RED DELICIOUS APPLES(2030) - Small fruit is tight in the market, which is keeping prices higher. We’ve got good inventory, but costs likely stay the same until spring.
📉Price Drops📉
These items have dropped in price this week:
ONION VIDALIA (2877) -We have switched to Mexican product, bringing prices down.
ICEBERG LETTUCE (2647 & 2655) - Good yields and strong quality this week, which is pushing prices down a bit week over week. Prices are still elevated due to Yuma to Salinas transition.
