Weekly Market Report

Welcome to the Weekly Market Report, your go-to rundown for all the highs and lows of the week.

Friday officially kicks off May...kind of wild, but also…bring on patio season. We've got several exciting new additions this week including ramps, golden kiwi, California cherries and peaches and several bitter greens from a new local farm we're excited to be sourcing from!

Whether you're planning spring features, prepping for Mother's Day, firing up for Cinco de Mayo, or just here for your weekly cheat sheet—here’s what’s worth knowing this week!

THE TL;DR VERSION

Market At A Glance:

  • 🔺Tight & elevated: Tomatoes remain extremely tight with heavy prorates and quality concerns for the next few weeks. Lettuce, celery, broccoli, and cauliflower are all very limited due to weather and transition gaps. Hot peppers and raspberries remain tight.
  • 🔻Easing: Cucumbers, green beans, tomatillos, and jicama are improving with new crop supply. Corn is starting to ease, peppers are seeing relief, honeydew has stabilized, and blueberries are building quickly.
  • ➡️ Transitioning: Spring transitions are driving variability, especially in lettuce. Onions are shifting to new crop. Tomatoes remain volatile between regions. Berries are mixed, and grapes are tightening as offshore supply winds down.

📈 What’s Up?: Price increases this week on iceberg, romaine lettuce, celery, cauliflower, zucchini, colossal Spanish onions, white potatoes, and coconut and raspberry purées as crop transitions, weather impacts, and higher input and freight costs continue to pressure supply and pricing.

📉 What's Down?: Price decreases this week on corn as markets ease, grape and Campari tomatoes, jalapeños, bell peppers, limes, asparagus, blackberries, green grapes, Cara Cara oranges, and green beans as production ramps up, additional supply comes online, and seasonal transitions improve overall availability.

🍅 Tomato Market Update: The tomato market remains extremely elevated this week and conditions are expected to continue until mid-May affecting mainly Romas and rounds.

🍃 New Farm Partner: Introducing Clearwater Farms! Our first order from them arrived today including some gorgeous purple mizuna, green mizuna, rapini, and dandelion greens.

🌟 New Arrivals: Locally foraged ramps are in! Plus, golden kiwi, USA red cherries, and USA peaches!

🔜 Coming Soon: Welsh Bros asparagus is *expected* to arrive next week. Get. Excited.

Market Recap

What's Up, What's Down

📈Price Increases📈

These items have surged in price this week:

  • ICEBERG, ROMAINE & CELERY STALKS, CAULIFLOWER (2647, 2655, 2696, 2687, 2689, 9072, 2317 & 2301) - Ongoing crop transition is impacting quality; orders are being managed closely to ensure best possible fills.
  • YELLOW & FANCY ZUCCHINI  (5490 & 3551) - Mexican growing regions have been impacted by recent rainfall, temporarily tightening supply and putting pressure on yields.
  • SPANISH ONION COLLOSAL (2874) - Northwest onion season has wrapped up, with supply now shifting to Southwest regions where sizing has been below spec. Expect elevated pricing to continue over the next few weeks.
  • POTATO WHITE CREAMER C & WHITE PREMIUM (3118 & 3122) - Manitoba C white potatoes has ended; transitioning to Florida supply at a higher cost.
  • COCONUT PUREE & RASPBERRY PUREE (8855 & 8551) - Freight and raw product increases are driving prices up.

📉Price Drops📉

These items have dropped in price this week:

  • CORN (2374) - Florida opened additional fields post-freeze, easing supply. FOBs softened, allowing us to buy ahead — with more relief expected in the coming week.
  • GRAPE, GRAPE MEDLEY, & CAMPARI TOMATOES (3410, 4254 & 4738)  - Ontario greenhouse production is ramping up, improving supply and putting downward pressure on pricing.
  • JALAPENO PEPPERS, YELLOW, GREEN & RED BELL PEPPERS (2994, 3029, 3010 & 2988) - Mexico yields have ramped up quickly and are expected to hold steady, with pricing reflecting strong availability.
  • LIMES (2720) - Sharp price drop as production ramps up, especially on 230s and 250s.
  • AAA WHITE ASPARAGUS (4699) - Improved availability out of the Netherlands.
  • BLACKBERRIES (2191) - Market adjusted following an opportunity buy out of Mexico, driven by a large harvest last week.
  • CAMPARI TOMAOTES (4738) - Ontario greenhouse production is ramping up, putting downward pressure on pricing.
  • GREEN GRAPES (2548) - Market adjusting as additional inventory flows into the local market.
  • CARA CARA ORANGES (3851) - Market adjusting as end-of-season Cara Cara supply floods the market; expect roughly 2–3 weeks of availability remaining.
  • GREEN BEAN (2153) - Northern Florida crops are back on with strong yields, driving price relief. Market should stay stable for now; quality is fair.

🌟New Arrivals🌟

Ramps | 7428 — A true spring favourite with bold, garlicky flavour that sits somewhere between a leek and wild onion. Availability is limited and the season is short, so now’s the time to feature them across menus! From simple grills and pastas to compound butters, pestos, and pickles. Get your ramp on.

USA Bing Cherries | 7622 —
Deep colour, firm texture, and a rich, sweet flavour. They hold up well in both raw and cooked applications, working across desserts, compotes, and baking, or bringing a nice contrast to savoury dishes like salads, duck, pork, and cheese boards.

Golden Kiwi | 7419 — Naturally sweet, low-acid profile and smooth, tropical flavour. The flesh is bright yellow with a softer bite than green kiwi and little to no tartness, making it easy to use across both sweet and savoury menus.

USA Peaches | 7549 — Fresh out of California! Juicy flesh, balanced sweetness, and that classic aromatic peach flavour. Great for slicing fresh, grilling, or working into desserts, but also play well in salads, salsas, and alongside proteins like pork and chicken.
